If you use the hook described in this guide as a means of vehicle extraction, you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Just to be sure everyone understands:
If you use this hook during a vehicle extraction, it could shear the bolts and send this 10 lb. piece of steel flying through
the air at enough speed to cause severe bodily injury and likely death, if it hits someone, not to mention leaving one huge
dent in your rescuer's truck.
Don't say we didn't warn you!
Unlike the Xterra, the Nissan Frontiers were not equipped with a front tow-hook. Rather than buying an OEM tow-hook for $45, why not spend $10-15 and have a superior constructed solid steel tow-hook. Call up your local auto salvage yards and find a tow-hook from a Chevrolet or GMC full-size 4x4 (or Z71) from model years 1988-98. I bought mine from a local salvage yard for $10. It was a big hunk of solid rusted steel, but a little sanding and 4-coats of industrial grade spray paint made it look just like new again. Well, it looked like new after the original install, three months ago.
Here is what you'll need:
1. Tow-hook (described above)
2. 2- 7/16 x 1 inch #5 grade minimum bolts (fine thread)
3. 2- 7/16" #5 grade minimum washers
4. Thread locker (medium or heavy duty doesn't matter just get some)
5. And a socket set
Next, find the factory threaded mounting holes located on the front passenger side of the frame, under the radiator. The picture below has arrows pointing at the two threaded bolt holes that you are looking for. Only the passenger side of the frame has threaded holes, which I'm sure, is a safety precaution.
Once you have located the threaded holes in the frame, apply thread locker to both of the bolts. Be sure to position your tow-hook the same as the one in the picture below, so the tow-hook's bolt holes line-up with the threaded holes in the frame.
There are many different torque specifications for tow-hook bolts, but the general consensus of the information I have read recommends tightening the bolts between 40-50 ft lb. This should safely hold everything in place, but DON'T FORGET TO USE THREAD LOCKER, it is your only real assurance that the bolts will remain tight. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions
