My home made canopy
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:41:32 AM »

well here it is. its not done but its been this way for a while now and works. my plan is to still screw snaps into the bed rails and rivet snaps into the army tarp after it is trimmed and stretched tight. I and i still need to weld in one center piece and one side in the front i ran out of metal.  Im still thinking about having my mom sew some fabric windows in the side cus its quite the blind spot.

I made a mental note to come back to this and comment since I was at work when I first saw it.  I obviously forgot.  I think it looks pretty cool..it's different than any other canopy type top I've seen.  I'd say you did a good job with it being custom work. icon_smile_thumbsup

The typical advantage of a canvas top is that it can fold up, leaving the bed open.  Yours has a rigid frame.  Aside from that, it looks effective.  Not pretty, but useful nonetheless.

I have  a fiberglass shell that I take on and off.  My dog also appreciates it, especially in cold weather.

yes I had planed to make it some kind of fold up or something and I still am. Im thinking about cutting it in half welding plates to each end then bolting them together. Then I could take it off in pieces for better stowage.it works for now and was a good way to keep teaching myself how to weld, but I still have ideas rolling around in my head. If you have any let me know. hmm maybe quick pins on each of the rungs like a hitch..?

If you need welding practice, start on your custom rear bumper next.   icon_smile_poke

I've got a hunch that your canopy can stand up to a CAT 5 tornado...  Looks mighty strong with the steel frame and heavy canvass.

Haha i was planning on doing one like yours smile

And hoot, The canopy might be the only thing left after the truck flys away. Although im in Oregon so not many tornadoes to worry about.
