Sorry I didn't get very many, after hurting the foot I couldn't get out and take pictures, but the video will make up for it.  Aaron is putting the video together tonight, should be uploaded by tomorrow icon_smile_thumbsup  Had a great time, and it was good for seeing everyone.  Thanks for all the help icon_smile_cheers

Nice pics i notice you most of you have no number plates, are number plates optional in the states, or you just do it for the trail

In certain states it is optional to have front plates. In other states it is mandatory to have one. I'm guessing Arizona is one of the optional states.

In AZ they only give you one plate.  (unless you get personalized)

Here are my pics. i got none of the trucks. I was going to climb the tower and take a picture of the group, but by the time I came out only ted was hanging around.

The tower

Generator control units

Generator Power Control unit, that big switch switches between the two generators for power, the switch was nearly a foot long in the box, lots of power..

Spare fuses? kinda cool

No idea on this one, but I'm assuming thats cooling oil. with pumps and everything
The chemical toilet was in here as well. You'll notice the floor is brown, now you know why.

Cooling Control system. The very rudimentary AC system controls were next to it.

This is the panel leading to the run the cable run between the tower and building. What confused me here was all the copper tubing. its just...tubing. May have something to do with the oil unit in the bathroom.

Heres the sign on the door to the second engine room. I  am not sure why they were separated physically, but it did have two generators. Maybe its the backup unit. I could not get this door open. I also looked around and could not locate the diesel tanks.

Nice wheelin pics, and in alot of those systems (I have installed a few) the fuel tanks are under ground and/or located in the base of the generator.

Its hard to tell from the smallish image, but its might be a component of the dielectric impedance matching system.  You have to tune the Microwave generators (the big dishes) to match the impedance of the air, to keep power from being reflected back into the RF generators.  The tuners are large variable capacitors.  I have run smaller ones (a few hundred watts) in the lab setting that use air as the dielectric, but in this setting an oil dielectric is probably necessary to handle many kilowatts of power.  They might also be coiling oil reservoirs for the RF energy conduit

The "tubing" you speak about is actually the conductors for the RF energy.  As the frequency of the AC signal increases, the electric field travels increasingly on the surface of the conductor, as a consequence of the behavior of the EM field equations.  At the 60Hz of home AC current the effect essentially doesn't exist, but at the Gigahertz involved with microwaves the effect is very real.  See the skin effect on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin_effect

The conductors are hollow because no e field travels in the center anyways.  Solid copper is expensive, tube is cheaper.  Plus, under high power, the copper conductor can be cooled internally with flowing water or oil if it is hollow.  The air/oil on the inside, and the air on the outside form the dielectric boundaries that guide the RF.  Think of this as a very blown up, higher power, higher frequency version of the coaxial cable you plug into the back of your television!

So, this "tubing" is really the cable for the high power microwaves that driver the large antenna (cone things) at the top of the tower.  It may merely be hollow inside, or it may be actively cooled.  Regardless it is pumping a lot of RF energy up into the tower.

I could not get this door open. I also looked around and could not locate the diesel tanks.

These generators, while being thermodynamically Diesel cycle (vs. Otto cycle for "gasoline" engines), most likely run directly on piped in natural gas, hence no tanks.

Diesel Thermodynamic Cycle:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_cycle

Otto Thermodynamic Cycle:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaus_Otto

Hope that gives you more information, and is at least somewhat interesting.  BTW, you want NO WHERE NEAR those microwave antenna atop the tower if they are cranked up.  If you have any scusceptor on your person (eg fillings, some ceramic components in cell phones, even the water in your body) they have the potential to fry these things, and if you stay up their long enough boil the water in your skin!

After the run, some of us were made it over to 4 Peaks Brewery in N. Scottsdale for a bite to eat, and some beverages.  And I discovered a beer milkshake (even though I still think it is overpriced).

Awesome pics Ted!  I am glad someone got pics of us eating lunch and chilling under the big tree in Edwards Park.  I also like all the pics you took from the tail-gunner position of the group on the trail. That was a good time.  icon_smile_thumbsup
