I don't normally do this, but since this is another Nissan messageboard, I'd be afraid some of our members might see this and think it's a good idea...
Basically, don't f* around with a winch installation. This guy will hurt someone if he actually uses this idea.
There are 4 things wrong with this:
1) He used 1/8" steel plate for the mount. This isn't nearly strong enough steel for a winch. Period.
2) He used #8 bolts. These aren't nearly strong enough bolts for a winch. Period. Not with as few as he used.
3) He frickin' slips this mount over a towing ball, which is NOT designed to handle the types of stresses in multiple directions that will come from using a winch. Balls can break; it's relatively common. And the mount can slip off, which is the most common thing! Even if you are using these for towing, you have safety chains for "just in case". But nope...not this "winch mount".
4) He used a 3,000 lb winch. That's an ATV winch. It's not strong enough to pull a stuck vehicle out of anything. The 3,000 lb line rating is for straight & level pulls on dry pavement. That's how winches are rated. So a 4,000+ lb car/truck stuck in, well, anything, is going to require a heckuva' lot more pull than a measely 3,000 lb straight-line pull.
Overall, this is an EXTREMELY dangerous and, dare I say, STUPID winch mounting idea, regardless of the winch size being used. Please don't anyone get to thinking it's a good idea, ok? There is absolutely, positively NOTHING good about this idea.

Hopefully he at least learner from his mistake, but in reality it is just as bad as someone hooking up to a brush guard, or looping a chain or strap over a ball.
People dont realize the differences between the forces involved in recovery vs towing.

Oh wow...
That's just ASKING for someone to get seriously injured or killed. I'll give him credit for a good idea, but a huge FAIL in executing it.
Quote
First.
Winches seem inherently dangerous for the average amateur driver to have on a vehicle.
Second.
I have no plans to hook up big vehicles and try pulling them out of muddy streams or
pulling farm tractors out of fields.
Third.
Juvenile comments aimed at gratuitously insulting someone on this forum belong in a sleezie bar
somewhere in downtown Maple Ridge, BC. Being a "Troll" is the word for that kind of stuff.
First time I have seen such behaviour on this forum....too bad.
Fourth.
This winch will be used with great care with me far from it using the "Radio Control" device
and any bystanders beside me.
Fifth.
If one uses a Block & Tackle pulley system to up the power, the bolts and Bar and Ball would
be even more likely to break !
Sixth.
From the You-Tube movies posted, it is a wonder more people aren't hurt by Winches.
Some of the Liberal faithful should push for Legislation to make them illegal since "it is
for our own good..."
Thanks for the warnings, folks.
Since I was worried about a winch before this Thread (why I never had one until now),
I will use it seldom and VERY carefully.

He still doesn't get it. DUDE YOUR WINCH RIG SUCKS. THROW IT AWAY. THANK YOU.

I love how he will be using "great care" and work the winch from afar with a remote. I mean what could go wrong with fool proof safety measures such as those!!!
He said he isnt going to use it to pull people out of mud or anything....then what is the point in having a winch? Drag yourself along the road???
There is so much wrong with this guy and those who say it is a good idea I dont know where to start....
Not to mention the kind of missile this thing will make inside his vehicle in the event of an MVA.

I'm a firm believer that unless you drop out of a tree naked onto your prey with a sharp stick you don't have a right to comment on my hunting style so STFU.

Also, the winch rating depends on what layer or rope is layered on the winch drum. So if you don't pull enough rope out of the winch drum, you need to de-rate the winch capacity.

Haha wow well I know this is an old thread but the stupidity of some people just amazes me.That is maybe the worst idea Ive ever witnessed, and the funny part is that the people commented on that page where it was originally posted agreed with and approved of his design. Hahaha
