Hey there, welcome to NOR scotty!!
I live in the Yukon, neighbor to Alaska. It's pretty "cool" up here!.. really it does rock, Alaska's awesome. As for Patrols, there's a few of them driving around my city. As a matter of fact one of them is up for sale right now. All right hand drive, lightly used and imported direct from Japan. The company that imports them up here is called Outback Imports. I'm not sure if there's a similar operation in Alaska, or what legal implications are involved in bringing one to the states, but there's definitely lots of capable 4x4s over there!
I've been mulling the idea of getting a Patrol myself, they're pretty sweet: solid axles, 4.2L turbo diesel and all Nissan, but probably won't happen soon, no money! They're selling here for $10,000 plus.. but very clean and in excellent shape. Check out the company here:

Hey there...
Importing a Patrol or any other used vehicle probably has different legal requirements between Canada and the US. For a US import, I think a used vehicle has to be 20 years or older (this the right number?). There are other practical considerations as well and am sure some others will kick in most of these better than I.

I think if its newer than 20 years old, it has to meet the current US emission certifications.

could you import it then fix it so you does pass the emissions? or does it have to pass the emmissions as soon as it comes in?

It's 25 years, not 20. If it's less than 25 years old, it can't be brought in.

You can import them, I'll ook up the federal case law for you. Each state may have different rules though.
I know a lot of military and their familles that are stationed in Japan have a lot more easier time importing vehicles into the USA.

They pay an EXORBITANT amount of money to have the cars "federalized" or they bring them over for 364 days and then have to get rid of them.
It's not any easier to bring over a vehicle from another country for military folks, unless the vehicle happens to be the same model and engine that was sold in the USA in which case it's not that tough for non-military folks either.

My dads friend bought a ferrari straight from the factory in Italy. I know he had to pay some extra taxes to import it, transportation of course, and equip it so it passes emissions, but other than that I think it wasn't to hard of a process.

He just paid the taxes to have it delivered, but there is very little to change on the car since the Ferrari complies with most of the US requirements. Japanese vehicles on the other hand, is a different story. The vehicle has to be torn apart to be modified (ie replacement of windows and wind shield, crash beams, emissions components etc) so the vehicle will comply with US federal laws, BUT I do believe there is a cut-off year where vehicles do not have to go through such processes, but I don't know what year.

Ferraris are sold in the US, so all the US crash testing was already done.
As for the newer Patrol, I would be afraid of it breaking down. Good luck going down to NAPA and getting parts for it.

On kind of a seperate note, there would be absolutely no problem if you had no intention of driving it on the street right? Least I would think they wouldnt have a problem with an OH only Patrol.
