Hawaii safety inspection/recon with a body lift?
« on: February 05, 2008, 06:37:08 PM »

Planning on a body lift, anyone had issues with the recon?  Already assuming I will have to find a friend for my safety inspection but if I could get it reconned I wouldn't have to worry about the safety inspection.

If anyone is interested in helping, on Oahu, I would supply the beer and food. icon_smile_cheers

In Hawaii you have to get a safety inspection and the associated stickers.  If you have done any modification, mainly to the suspension, increasing the height of the truck or tire size it makes it hard to get the safety inspection.  Legally a reconstruction check is required to verify your vehicle is safe to drive on the road, then you also get a reconstruction sticker.  If you don't have the safety check and a recon sticker then you can get a ticket.  Obviously there are a lot of big trucks in Hawaii they have just been cracking down on it more recently.  There are ways around it but it is better to go the legal route. No way you can get the reconstruction permit with the 3" bodylift on a Nissan.  The reason is, the Nissans have that 1.5" OEM rubber spacer between the body and frame.  The 3" body lift would yield a 4.5" distance between body and frame, which does not conform to Recon rules.  I had to take mine off, then go back to the recon station, then I put the bodylift back on.

Here's a link to the Hawaii recon regulations.  This is an official State document and it looks like it was typed on an old, manual typewritter.  In fact, I really think it was!  There are even some handwritten notes on it.
